The video was an exploration into what a building could be. Using the light as a marker of time the building / the creature transforms. It was this linear transformation that I wanted to bring the the Jewelry District.

Urban Design Principles is the third of the core studios at the Rhode Island School of Design. Sited in the Jewelry District of Providence Rhode Island, the former light industrial neighborhood is in visible transformation, as Brown University and Johnson and Whales University begin to re-inhabit the derelict buildings. It is now being dubbed the Knowledge District.
The site is adjacent to the newly renovated Brown Medical Department building. Programmatically our construction had to contain a dormitory for medical students, hotel for visiting faculty and patrons, an elderly housing facility, and a fourth programmatic element of our choice.
This varied program challenged us to grapple with the differing needs of each sub-client. As we developed our buildings in the large site area we had to consider also the neighborhood as it is now and how we saw the future of the Knowledge District.
The video was an exploration into what a building could be. Using the light as a marker of time the building / the creature transforms. It was this linear transformation that I wanted to bring the the Jewelry District.
