ARCHITECTURE 240 - Architectural Design II

Welcome:

Welcome to ARCH 240. In this course, you will explore architectural projects to develop a tectonic language, focusing on function, form, and materiality. You will start with introductory projects considering site analysis, sustainable design, and user experience. Each project builds your technical skills and design sensibility. The course culminates with designing a Natural Therapy Center in upstate New York, synthesizing your learning while addressing therapeutic spaces, natural light, and environmental integration. You will also investigate structural support in design and aesthetics. Through modeling and digital tools, you'll learn to communicate your ideas effectively.

ARCH 240 aims to equip you with knowledge and skills to articulate a coherent architectural language, deepening your appreciation for architecture’s impact on well-being. By the end, you will have developed a design philosophy reflecting your view on architecture's potential to heal and rejuvenate.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In this final lower-division design studio students will be able to synthesize, organize and prepare clear and articulate architectural proposals that present the skills learned in the previous three semesters. Additionally, students will conclude this sequence by applying new concepts such as the integration of sustainable and mechanical systems, architectural detailing, and integrating digital design software into their final presentations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Students will demonstrate the ability to develop and present comprehensive architectural proposals that effectively integrate sustainable design principles, advanced mechanical systems, and intricate architectural detailing. They will utilize digital design software to enhance clarity and articulation in their final presentations, ensuring that their work is not only visually appealing but also communicates the underlying concepts and technicalities effectively. This integration of technology and sustainable practices will prepare students to address contemporary architectural challenges with innovation and proficiency.

COURSE PHILOSOPHY:

I believe that the way each student approaches a design problem is incredibly unique to each individual student, and this uniqueness is forged through an intuitive process that is greatly supported by physical experience. This simple philosophy is central to how I have structured this course, and I encourage every student to actively explore their own creativity, test new ideas without hesitation, ask thoughtful questions, and challenge themselves to produce work that reflects deep consideration and understanding. It is essential to embrace this journey, as it fosters personal growth and cultivates a rich educational environment.
